How do I know if coaching is right for my son?
Coaching may be right for your son if he is open to guidance, willing to receive feedback, and interested in growing into a more confident, capable, and responsible young man.
The young men who benefit most from coaching understand that adulthood requires learning new skills, taking greater responsibility, and developing the discipline, character, and self-awareness needed to succeed in life.
What challenges do young men typically bring to coaching?
Young men come to coaching for many different reasons. Some want greater confidence, independence, and direction in their lives. Others are trying to develop better habits, become more responsible, improve their performance at school or work, or build the discipline and self-control needed to achieve their goals.
Many are seeking guidance around important decisions related to education, career, relationships, and adulthood. Others want to strengthen communication skills, develop stronger character, and learn how to navigate life with greater maturity and self-leadership.
At its core, coaching helps young men navigate the challenges of becoming an adult — learning how to think for themselves, take responsibility for their lives, and create a future they are proud of.
How is your coaching different from other coaches and mentors for young men?
My coaching is different because it is informed by extensive experience developing young men and a deep understanding of the skills required to succeed as an adult in today’s world.
I have helped thousands of young men successfully transition into adulthood through my private coaching, university teaching, leadership development work, and men’s mentoring programs.
I teach leadership and communication at both the undergraduate and MBA level and understand not only the challenges young adults face, but also what it takes to succeed in higher education, relationships, leadership roles, and adult life.
As an executive coach, I also work extensively with entrepreneurs, executives, physicians, lawyers, pilots, and other high-performing professionals. This gives me firsthand insight into the skills young men need to develop to be successful in the modern world, including communication, leadership, decision-making, self-discipline, responsibility, resilience, and self-awareness.
Can coaching help a young man build confidence, discipline and direction?
Absolutely. In fact, having a coach or mentor can be a powerful catalyst for a young man’s development.
One of the most important tasks of young adulthood is learning how to become independent, responsible, and confident in your own abilities. While parents play an important role, there comes a point where mentors, teachers, coaches, employers, peers, and life experiences begin to have a greater influence on a young man’s growth and development.
Coaching provides guidance, accountability, encouragement, and perspective during this transition. Over the years, I have seen many young men develop greater confidence, discipline, direction, and maturity through the coaching process as they learn to take ownership of their lives and step more fully into adulthood.
Is coaching for young men worth the investment?
Yes. Coaching can be a formative developmental and educational experience for a young man.
Young men often benefit from learning alongside a more mature, experienced, and accomplished man who can provide guidance, perspective, accountability, and support during the transition into adulthood.
One of the greatest benefits of coaching is that it allows young men to learn from someone else’s experience rather than figuring everything out on their own. This can help them avoid mistakes and poor decisions that cost time, money, energy, and years of unnecessary struggle.
Like education and professional development, coaching is a valuable investment in a young man’s future, growth, and potential.
